Challenges of Internet Security
Challenges of Internet Security
Running a business at home has many challenges. Web design, SEO, keyword research, ecommerce, ect. One often overlooked aspect of Online business is Internet Security. There exists so many tools to address various risks associate with conducting business online. Viruses, spyware, hacking risks, ect. The Challenge comes when one wants to pick the best solution. There are load of programs. Some folks are happy with the main stream big players such as Norton. Others, myself include, know that not only is Norton not the best internet security solution out there, it is overpriced and unstable. When anyone mentions PC trouble, freezing, shutting down, running slow, ect, I always ask "do you have Norton Installed". The answer is generally yes, because they got it with their PC and don’t know any better. I suggest removing it and installing something like AVG, which is free and actually better at finding viruses and it takes up far less PC resources (no freezing or slow PC). This generally solves their problem. Its sad that industry pushes second rate solutions when there exists much better software that not only does a better job, but also costs less and doesn’t hog PC resources.
What are the Risks that threaten Internet Security?
The most well know security issues that face PC’s online are Viruses and Spyware. There are also risks of hacking, risks of hijacking Internet service and theft of private data (such as accounts, banking, ect). Knowing these risks and implementing solid internet security tools makes the internet a much safer place to conduct business. Without the right tools, your a virtual sitting duck and it is only a matter of time before major problems begin to develop. This can show as slowing of your PC, and Internet, strange PC behavior and full blown system crash and Data loss. I had a experience with Data loss and recovery that I discussed in a previous post. What a horrifying experience, having your PC crash and losing all you data! Thankfully I am a clever hillbilly, I managed to recover my data and implement tools to prevent this from happening again.
To protect yourself online you need a upto date and high quality,
Virus tool,
spyware tool,
firewall,
backup tool, and,
lots of extra data storage space.
There are plenty of tools available to accomplish these requirements. AVG , formerly Grisoft, is one of the best free virus software and they have a free spyware and firewall tool. While some of these free tools are very good, a complete All in One package is best. I do not recommend Norton, in fact, if you have Norton installed, I would recommend removing it and replacing it with something else. Seriously. Doing this ,you will likely notice your PC run faster. I have done a lot of research, testing different programs, searching reviews and the best all in one, according to Consumer Report is developed by PC Tools. Consumer Report is a very trusted reviewer of all sorts of consumer products/services. PC Tools All In One Internet Security suite includes virus scans, spyware scans and monitoring and a quality Firewall. It is much much much cheaper than Norton and the other big names, without consuming excessive amounts of your system resources. It simply does the job of protecting your PC from all Internet Security threats without compromising the stability of your machine. Of course there are plenty of other options out there, but PC Tools is worth a try, since you can download and try it free.

Thanks for the comments folks!
The underlying message here is one must ensure they have up to date and reputable software working to protect them. I have my internet go through a router, then a software firewall, and also the Virus software is always active when online. I know here I have promoted PC Tools. There are a number of other software providers that I would trust with the task of protecting my PC. McAfee is one, Panda Security is also good.
I suppose the other message here is that what is auto-loaded on your PC is not always the best option for you. Another example of this for me is Internet Explorer. I much prefer Mozilla FireFox. The more active one is online, statically the more ‘threat’ potential there is to your PC. Therefore the more crucial it is to ensure these steps are always taken.
